Sadie Bass, a 25-year-old Michigan native who currently resides in Nashville, took a big leap when she auditioned for Season 22 of The Voice.
She has been working toward pursuing her country music dreams, but there’s just one thing that has been holding her back, her stage freight. Before stepping onto the stage for her performance which aired on NBC on Tuesday night (Sept. 20), she took a minute to tell the viewers about her fears.
“Not a lot of people knew that I sang,” she shared. “I always just sang for my family, in the car or in the shower, and I’ve always been a writer, too. I’ve kept a diary and a songbook. But, I think The Voice is going to be a test to see if I have what it takes and if I can do something like this for a living.”
Luckily, during the blind audition, she mustered up the courage to step onto the stage and her powerful vocals instantly filled the room as she sang a stunning cover of Keith Urban’s “Stupid Boy.”
“I still have that sinking feeling,” she continued. “I think I’ve always been not confident in my singing. I think going on The Voice and learning and getting that feedback is going to make a huge difference going forward.”
Getting up in front of judges Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, Camila Cabello, and John Legend was no easy feat for the young singer, but nevertheless, she made her mark. Shelton was first to turn his chair around, but his wife, Stefani quickly followed, putting a wide smile on Bass’s face.
“When I heard this song, I was like, ‘Is this song written about Blake? A stupid boy?’” Camilla Cabello joked.
Shelton began his pitch as Bass revealed the challenge she faced before them.
“I’m a songwriter at heart. I’ve had stage fright my whole life, 25 years. Today, I just overcame it with you guys.”
“The stage fright thing can keep someone from opening up and honestly thrusting yourself into this most awful, horrifying situation of performance. That is a hell of a way to overcome your fear right there. So, congratulations, you did it,” Shelton said, commending Bass and acknowledging her bravery.
Cabello sympathized with the contestant, revealing she went through the same thing when she auditioned for The X Factor in 2012.
“I was 15, I had never sang in front of anyone before and like my knees were shaking, I thought I was gonna pass out. So I wanna say I’m really proud of you because that’s no small feat,’ she said before offering her support throughout her journey even though she won’t be working as her coach.
Then, it was time for Bass to hear what Stefani had to say.
“A lot of this will have to do with your coach, because sometimes you just need that person that can just be a mirror to yourself and say, ‘Listen. You are amazing. You just need to let it loose right now.’ So, my coaching would be just building you up, and I think even in your lane of country, being that I was late to the game, but now almost seven years with Blake, I’ve learned so much,” Stefani shared. “It’s so in my heart because I am a songwriter, and the music is all about the story. So, don’t pick Blake. Pick me.”
Bass surprised herself and viewers when she decided to compete on Team Gwen. She informed Shelton that he was her initial pick, but then she changed her mind at the last minute.
“I prayed for you, Blake, to turn around for me. But then I thought, Gwen, you know what? You’re a little against the grain,” she said before turning to Shelton. “I think the second you heard I was from Michigan, I don’t know if you believed in what was in here. So, Gwen. I’m going to have to go with you.”
Sadie Bass will continue her journey on The Voice, which airs Mondays and Tuesdays on NBC at 8 pm ET/PT.
