Tom Morello Congrats His Friend for Nobel Prize in Chemistry

Tom Morello sent a congratulatory message to his friend about Nobel Prize in the Chemistry category. Rage Against the Machine‘s guitarist Tom Morello also attended Harvard to study Political Science.

Carolyn Bertozzi, Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Humanities and Sciences and a chemistry professor at Stanford University, was awarded the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Carolyn Bertozzi and Rage Against the Machine guitarist were in a music band together long before that.

After the announcement by the Nobel team, Rage Against the Machine‘s famous guitarist Tom Morello thanked Bertozzi on Instagram. He also tells a humorous tale from the scientist’s Ivy League days.

Morello wrote it congratulations message to Carolyn Bertozzi from his Instagram account:

“Congratulations to my former Harvard bandmate @carolyn.bertozzi on her Nobel Prize in chemistry! We won the Ivy League Battle of the Bands in 1986 with our rockin’ group ‘Bored of Education’’ with her on keyboards & me in spandex.”

That same year, Morello graduated from Harvard University. After graduating from Harvard, Bertozzi went on to earn her Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley.

According to Stanford, Bertozzi established the discipline of bioorthogonal chemistry. It is a collection of chemical reactions that enables researchers to investigate molecules and their interactions in living things while not interfering with normal biological processes.

According to Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne, “Carolyn Bertozzi has won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and I am overjoyed. Carolyn established a new technique of researching biomolecular processes by pioneering the subject of bioorthogonal chemistry, which has enabled scientists all across the world obtain a better knowledge of chemical interactions.”

Rage Against the Machine canceled their 2023 tour dates:

“It’s been almost three months since Chicago, and I still look down at my leg in disbelief. Two years of waiting through the pandemic, hoping we would have an opening to be a band again and continue the work we started 30 some odd years ago. Rehearsing, training, reconciling, working our way back to form. Then one and a half shows into it and my tendon tears. Felt like a sick joke the universe played on me. As I write this I remind myself it’s just bad circumstance. Just a fucked up moment.

Unfortunately it is a moment that requires a lot of work and healing. I have a severe tear in my left Achilles tendon and only 8% of my tendon was left intact. And even that portion was severely compromised. It’s not simply a question of being able to perform again. But extends to basic functionality going forward. That’s why I’ve made the painful and difficult decision to cancel the remaining shows on our 2023 North American leg. I hate cancelling shows. I hate disappointing our fans. You have all waited so patiently to see us and that is never lost on me. I never take that for granted.

For you I Have the ultimate gratitude and respect. To my brothers Tim, Brad, and Tom; to El P, Killer Mike, Trackstar and the whole RTJ crew; to everyone on our production team: techs, cooks, drivers, assistants, security squad, to anyone and everyone who made the shows thus far possible, all my love and respect.
