Could Tim McGraw be a lucky charm for the MLB team, Philadelphia Phillies?

McGraw, his wife, Faith Hill, and their three daughters, Gracie, 25, Maggie, 24, and Audrey, 20, all attended the exciting game on Tuesday (Nov. 1) that resulted in a win against the Houston Astros in a final score of 7-0. Also by his side were his brothers, Matthew McGraw and Mark McGraw.

During the game, the three-time Grammy winner appeared on the jumbotron at Citizens Bank Park and proudly showed off what he was wearing. McGraw pointed to his back which read his last name, along with the number 45, indicating that he was sporting his dad’s jersey from back in the day.

“We had such a great time at the #WorldSeries game last night! Having Faith and all our girls there, along with my brothers and our niece was so special. We really missed having our sister Cari, niece Ceriah and our Uncle Hank with us,” McGraw shared the following day on Twitter.

The Fox sports MLB Twitter account shared the prideful moment on their page with the caption, “Country music star Tim McGraw is wearing his father’s Phillies jersey at tonight’s game 🙌  His dad, Tug McGraw, won a World Series with the Phillies in 1980.”

McGraw’s father, Frank Edwin McGraw Jr., a.k.a “Tug,” played for the Phillies from 1975-84. It turns out that talent runs deep in the McGraw family, just in different ways. The elder McGraw’s position on the team was a relief pitcher and with his help, the Phillies earned their first World Series championship in 1980. In total, the Phillies have celebrated two World Series championships so far.

The same thing happened when Tug played for the New York Mets, who were crowned World Series champs in 1969. During the Mets 1973 season, he coined the phrase “Ya Gotta Believe” after seeing the team go from last place to the very top.

During Tuesday’s game, the “Humble And Kind” singer matched the energy of the excited crowd as he cheered and punched the air with his fist to show his support for the MLB sports team.

“Tim McGraw in the house!!!!” another Twitter user wrote after spotting the singer in the crowd.

Ahead of the big game, he posted a video of Tug striking out the player at bat, a huge feat which led Philadelphia to the 1980 World Series game 42 years ago.

“let’s go #Phillies!” McGraw wrote.

The singer has proved to be a longtime fan of the MLB team, but it wasn’t until later in life that he realized he and his father were connected in their love for sports. At 11 years old, McGraw found his birth certificate, indicating who his father was. Earlier this year, he told NPR about an encounter between them after a ballgame during which it was made it clear that they could be friends but not family.

“When I found out Tug McGraw was my dad, it gave me something in my little town in Louisiana, something that I would have never reached for. How could I ever be angry?” he once told Esquire of his relationship with his father. “My name was Smith as a kid because my stepdad’s name was Horace Smith. I felt like when I found that out, you know, he’s a professional baseball player who’s successful, to me, it made me think that blood is in my veins, so that ability is in there… so I found sort of that grit inside me that he must have had to succeed at what he did. And it changed what I thought I could make out of my life.”

The father and son relationship grew stronger from this point on and lasted until Tug passed away in 2004 at age 59, after losing his battle with brain cancer.

Since then, McGraw has continued to honor his father’s accomplishments. Before the 2008 World Series in Philadelphia, he spread his father’s ashes on the mound and even threw out the first pitch.

So far, the Philadelphia Phillies have won 2 of their 3 games in this year’s World Series. If they take home the next two wins, they will be able to say that they are once again World Series champions.
