The Museum of Contemporary Art In LA To Showcase Carl Craig’s Party/After Party Installation
The creative mediums of visual and audio arts will merge when the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) facilitates the Carl Craig Party/After-Party at the museum’s WAREHOUSE location at the Geffen Contemporary.
Beginning on April 16 and ending on July 23, 2023, the exhibit is designed to take visitors on a journey from the standpoint of a DJ capturing the escalating celebration of a night out at the club in an immersive audiovisual experience.
As guests move through the WAREHOUSE, they will be surrounded by the sounds of techno. A dark setting is occasionally interrupted by neon strips until the skylights above flood the space with natural light, indicating the peak of the party and the shift towards “dawn.”
Some parts of the exhibition will reference Craig’s own tinnitus, a result of prolonged exposure to loud music. Essentially, Party/After-Party offers visitors a glimpse into Craig’s personal world and the soundscapes he creates.
“With Party/After-Party, Craig fuses the legacies of Detroit techno and minimalist sound art,” said Alex Sloane, MOCA Associate Curator and organizer of the exhibition. “Using MOCA’s WAREHOUSE itself as the inspiration for his composition, Craig has created a new chapter for the work.”
MOCA, in partnership with Insomniac and Secret Project, will be hosting Party/After-Party Sessions, a sequence of three live concerts at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA on Thursday, May 25, Saturday, June 17, and Saturday, July 22, to accompany the Party/After-Party exhibit.
The concerts are co-curated by Craig, who will also be performing, and will showcase various artists, including Moodymann, DJ Holographic, DJ Minx, and Kenny Larkin, among others.
This is an opportunity for music fans and art lovers to come together and celebrate the intersection of these two cultural phenomena. Carl Craig: Party/After-Party is free courtesy of Carolyn Clark Powers.
