Scotty McCreery Talks New Music and Fatherhood, Teases 2023 Tour

Scotty McCreery is wrapping up a banner year with some new deliveries – his first child, a deluxe album, and a new single. “It Matters to Her” follows his five consecutive No. 1 hits: “Five More Minutes” (certified Double Platinum), “This is It” (two-week #1, certified Platinum), “In Between” (certified Gold), “You Time” (certified Gold), and “Damn Strait” (three-week #1, certified Gold). The song appears on Same Truck: The Deluxe Album, which includes six new tracks.

McCreery and his wife Gabi welcomed their first child, Merrick “Avery” McCreery on October 24, announcing the birth on Instagram.

“Never known a love like this. Merrick ‘Avery’ McCreery joined us 11 days early on October 24th at 4:34am! 7 lbs 13oz of nothin but love💙 Thank yall for all of your prayers during this exciting season of life! Healthy baby and a healthy mama! Praise God🙌🏼🙏🏼”

McCreery chatted with Country Now about what has surprised him about fatherhood, what his wife loves the most about “It Matters to Her,” and what he has planned for the new year.

Reflecting on the first few weeks of Avery’s life, McCreery shared what has surprised him the most. “I don’t know if I thought it would be harder or tough, but I think because I love him so much, even when he is yelling in the middle of the night, it’s like I can’t even get upset. It’s like, all right buddy, come here,” he says.

“Even just the diaper changes and stuff I was kind of not so sure about, but it’s been fine. I haven’t been too grossed out,” he laughed.

Fans can get a glimpse into how the new parents prepared for baby Avery in the music video for McCreery’s latest single, “It Matters to Her.” Directed by Jeff Ray (who also directed the “Five More Minutes,” “This is It,” “In Between,” and “Damn Strait” music videos), the video was filmed at Scotty and Gabi’s home in Raleigh, NC and their beach house at North Topsail Beach, NC. From announcing their pregnancy to building the nursery, the video documents the couple’s journey to becoming first-time parents.

McCreery shared that his wife doesn’t love being on camera, but that he loves showing her off. “She can be a little shy and introverted,” he says, “but she’s been so cool about music videos and stuff. I love to show off her and I love to show off our life and what we’re up to.”

She agreed to have cameras at their wedding for “This Is It,” so he proposed the idea of documenting her pregnancy. “I was like, I’d really love to document this process of getting ready for our baby Avery and what we’re going through. And she was so cool to say yes.” Since baby Avery arrived 11 days early, he made a cameo appearance at the end of the video, too.

“It Matters to Her” started as a writing session via Zoom with songwriters Rhett Akins and Lee Miller. “It was just kind of one of those conversations that turned into a song,” says McCreery. “Sometimes you show up to the write and you have an idea and you go right there for it, but we were just kind of talking just about, hey, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference to our wives.” That conversation led to the creation of the song. “My wife loves the line about shut up and listen to what she has to say,” he laughs. “That’s her favorite part.”

The song appears on Same Truck: The Deluxe Album, which McCreery says is actually the collection of songs originally planned before the pandemic happened. “The way we made the Same Truck album was different than any other because of the pandemic. So we had a whole project ready before the world shut down and then the world obviously did shut down and we had all this time. So we wrote more songs, recorded more songs, and those are what made the same truck project. But I still had all these others over here that I love. So the Deluxe project is really kind of the original Same Truck project. Now we get to put ’em all together, so it’s exciting.”

The six new tracks include:

  • Falling for a Stranger (Aaron Eshuis, Travis Wood, and Hannah Ellis)
  • Here and Ready (Abe Stoklasa, Sarah Buxton, and Mikey Reeves)
  • Nothin’ Right (Scotty McCreery, Jordan Schmidt, Jared Mullins, and James McNair)
  • On It (Scotty McCreery, Jessi Alexander, Jonathan Singleton, and Frank Rogers)
  • Live a Little (Scotty McCreery, Aaron Eshuis, and Blake Chaffin)
  • Small Town Story (Scotty McCreery, Ashley Gorley, and Zach Crowell)

McCreery’s paternity leave will wrap up after Thanksgiving and he’ll perform on Nov. 30 at the Downtown Hoedown in Las Vegas, NV, which he says will be bittersweet. “It’s a weird thing for me, ‘cause it’s been the best time ever being off the road and welcoming Baby Avery. But at the same time I miss it, I miss the road, I miss the stage, I miss my fans, so I can’t wait to get back out there and play the music.”

He says that he expects the music to feel different now that he’s a dad. “It’ll probably feel a little different now having Avery here and certain songs might hit a little differently, but I can’t wait to see the band again and really just get the music going.”

The Garner, North Carolina native will co-headline three acoustic shows with Lee Brice next month, where the two artists will stay on the stage together the entire time and trade off songs: December 15 (Fort Smith, AR), December 16 (El Dorado, AR), and December 17 (Huntsville, AL).

Looking ahead to next year, McCreery says that he’s already thinking about the next chapter of his music. “We’ve already got a tour kinda lined up for next year. We’re gonna be busy, so we’ll be announcing that stuff soon. And then we’re gonna be writing and recording again next year. So I know we’re putting out this deluxe album right now, but we’re already looking forward to the next chapter too.”

He added, “Now with Avery, my first child, my son I’m sure he’s gonna have a few songs on the record so I can’t wait to see what comes out ’cause we’re just getting started.”
