Nicki Minaj’s Record Label Announcement

In an interview with Queen Radio on Mar 3, Nicki Minaj disclosed she was on the phone with Republic Records’ co-president, who encouraged her to make the big announcement. This was when Minaj solidified for the entire world; she was now a label owner. As part of her announcement, Nicki elaborated a bit. The now label executive said,

“Don’t think my label is exclusively rap, or Black, or anything. We got some other genres.”

The news may surprise some, but others understand the potential that comes with running an enterprise of such diversity. And such news only adds to how big of a move this is for the hip-hop history maker.

A Mogul In The Making

Minaj’s outstanding acumen is undeniable. Those who follow Minaj know she’s always been on the move regarding diversification. Not only did Nicki Minaj announced in 2022 that she was starting a management company, but she also declared launching a record label. According to Essence, Minaj laid the blueprint for what was ahead in a 2022 conversation with Budden. In Minaj’s words,

“I would always say the female rappers before me should have retired as moguls. And I would say, why isn’t there a female version of Jay-Z? So, I was like, ‘I’m gonna be that person; I’m gonna do that.’”

At the time, the world only saw the plans. But now it sees the fulfillment, which is enormous.

Minaj Remembers Where She Came From

As she talked about her current endeavors, Minaj also acknowledged Lil Wayne, whom she credited for being there from the beginning. She admitted that she learned a lot working with Lil Wayne and coming up in the industry. And she’s reached the point where she’s ready to pass it on. Moreover, she discussed some weaknesses she recognized in the industry, referred to as “microwaveable artists.” According to her, such situations have arisen because there is a need for more structure and people who put their full weight behind the artist. But she intends to do things differently. When it comes to her artists, Nicki says,

“Nah, I’m gonna make it my business to see you shine.”

An Empowered Leader Empowers Others

Seeing people rise to their potential and carving out spaces for themselves and others is incredibly empowering. So here’s a hip-hop salute to Nicki Minaj and best wishes for her entrepreneurial endeavors.
