Joanie, a 20 years old Quebecoise Pop Artist who fell in love with music since a young age. Joanie sings since a young age and started to learn piano and guitar at 16 years old. Music is her biggest passion. It saved her life. “I can’t live without music”, she says.

“I sing since a young age and I always dreamed of being a singer. I realized that it is what I want to do until I die at 13 years old. Music is my life, my escape, my everything and my lifesaver. If I can help people with my music, if I can make them feel understood, important, loved and less alone, if I can be the light in their day or their moonlight in the dark, I will be the happiest. This is one of the reasons I love to make music.”

Lisa: Hi Joanie! You say you fell in love with music since a young age. Growing up, how important was music in your life? Can you remember the moment when you decided that you wanted to be a musician? Was it an easy or hard choice to make?

Joanie: Hello Lisa! Music has been one of the most important things in my life. It has helped me a lot in many ways since I’m young. It saved my life many times. I wouldn’t be here anymore without music and I am nothing without it. It is my oxygen. I remember singing in front of my parents, I always put up a little show for them and I always told them since a young age « I want to be a singer. That’s what I want to do until I die.” The hardest thing I had to do was in my last year of high school, I had to choose what I wanted to study for my future and nothing else really interested me. I visited schools and talked with teachers but I kept mentioning my music dream to everyone. When I told my teachers that I would not continue school for my music, they all told me it was a mistake. The people I used to call my friends called me an idiot and told me that I am ruining my life. I didn’t know that following my heart and pursuing my dreams was the worst mistake in life. I’m happy with my decision and I won’t do anything different. I have a job on the side, I work full time as a Pharmacist assistant technician and when I am home I make music, covers and videos. I also do lives on Sessions which is amazing! I love it there.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

Joanie: I’d describe my music as relatable because many people can relate to my songs. Some people told me that. Comforting in some ways because it can bring peace. I wrote Dear Soulmate for my best friend Queenny as a gift for her 18th birthday and my goal is to help her be calm and feel better whenever she needs. We are 8h away and it ain’t easy but It can feel like I am with her when she listens to it. Moonlight is also calm and I wrote it for BTS as a thank you to them for helping me and saving my life. I’m still hoping for them to listen to it one day.

Who are some of your favorite artists or rather, what musicians have continued to inspire you and your music? Who would you absolutely still love to work with in the future?

Joanie: OMG! My favourite artists… the list is long but I will name a few! BTS, Blackpink, Monsta X, Ateez, A.C.E, Sunmi, IU, Stray Kids, Eric Nam, 5 Seconds Of Summer, One Direction, Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Shawn Mendes, Ed Sheeran, Charlie Puth, Jackson Wang, Billie Eilish, Little Mix, Boys World and many more. The artists I love all inspire me in some ways, mostly BTS, BlackPink, Jackson Wang, 5 Seconds Of Summer, Little Mix.I would absolutely love to workwith Jackson Wang! He’s so talented and one of the realest artists out there! Also down to  Earth.

What types of change do you feel your music can initiate?

Joanie: I think my music can bring peace and awareness for the things we don’t talk enough about. Mental Health is something I care about a lot and it is something I want to make a change. I suffer from Anxiety, Depression and Insomnia and it truly sucks. I’m learning to live with it and accept it. Many people suffer from that and other mental illnesses and we don’t talk about it enough. People have to be more open minded about this topic and many more topics such as LGBTQ+, Equality for everyone no matter the skin colour, the nationality, the religion, the sexual orientation. We are all equal and we are all the same at the end, human beings with feelings! What makes every single one person unique is their culture, their language, their nationality and their story. I believe in equality, peace and love and I hope my music can help make a change in all that.

I really liked your song and video for “MINDBREAKER Feat. Flight Lounge “ What inspired you to write it?

Joanie: I’m happy you like it! I had so much fun working on that song with Flight Lounge. What inspired me to write is my personal experience from 2 years ago. Toxic relationships aren’t easy to get out of and are damaging. The guy played with my feelings for 2 months and abused me mentally and emotionally. If my old friend from high school wasn’t there, I don’t know how I would have gotten out of that toxic relationship. I never had a boyfriend but it can be toxic when you get to know the person too and he made me fall in love with and made me believe he did too but it was all a game for him. I picked myself up piece by piece. It was really hard but I’m stronger now. I hope that people that are going through the same thing can feel less alone and know that it is possible to get out of it!

What’s your favorite song you’ve written so far, and why?

Joanie: I love them all lots but Moonlight has a special place in my heart and I hold it close to it haha. Moonlight is really special to me.

What non-musical entities and ideas have impacted your music?

Joanie: My past, what I’ve been through such as bullying, family issues, toxic friendships, toxic relationships, self harm. I hope singing about my story can help people feel understood and less alone. I also get inspired by people and scenarios I imagine sometimes haha.

At the end of the day, what do you hope people take away from your music?

Joanie: I hope they can feel less alone and understood. I hope they can find comfort in my music.

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

Joanie: More respect and getting paid better.

What are your plans for the future?

Joanie: Releasing an EP, hopefully before 2021 ends or in the beginning of 2022. I want to release albums too in the future and more YouTube videos. More collabs for sure and maybe perform. That would be really cool.
