Lily Rose Recalls Hearing The Demo Of Her Latest Release, 'Whatcha Know About That': 'It Was A No Brainer'

Lily Rose steps outside of her comfort zone with her new widows down anthem, “Whatcha Know About That.”

As soon as Rose heard the budding country love story written by Dave Pittenger, Jonathan Hutcherson, Sydney Cubit and Miranda Glory, she was hooked. She quickly took note of its uniqueness and ability stand out among the rest.

“The song really slaps when you got your windows rolled down in the fall and the leaves are changing. But there’s something about this song that has that Keith Urban, boot-stomping thing to it, which is one of my favorite aspects of country music,” Rose told Country Now. “So, it was a no-brainer when I heard that song. My whole team, we all kind of freaked. We were like, ‘Yeah, we gotta have this.’”

While it still encompasses elements of her usual pop and country-infused stylings, this song also takes on a slightly different path from her previous releases. As she sings the lighthearted lyrics, Rose wonders if she and the potential new love interest are compatible by testing to see if they appreciate the same delicacies of a simple southern lifestyle.

“Do you love a little Dolly P coming through the dash / Does your mama’s sweet tea make the hot days cold,” Rose asks in the chorus.

So far, fans have been latching on to the new song just as Rose did when she first gave it a listen.

The “Villain” singer recently played the new tune live for the first time on the day of its release, which also happened to be her first night on the road for Dylan Scott’s Amen To That Tour. Since Rose had already shared sneak peaks of the song before the full version dropped, fans were quick to sing along with the live performance.

“I was like, this song came out 18 hours ago and you guys are singing every word already. It’s crazy,” she said. “They seem to be digging it and we’re getting a lot of fans because of it as well, so I’m just grateful.”

She added, “You want it to feel huge live. You want it to just be one of those songs that you don’t have to think about anything. It’s not gonna be something that triggers sadness, I hope you get through something. It’s not a breakup, it is just a free three minutes that you have to enjoy country music. So I hope the listener just feels light, weight wise, and brightness, you know?”

Rose lets loose in the accompanying performance video which incorporates all the light and airy features she hoped the song would portray, while once again getting the chance to experiment with some new skills. The video flips back and forth between footage of her driving around in a 93 Bronco as she enjoys the sunny weather and smiling from ear to ear as she dances and sings along to the uplifting lyrics in front of the parked truck.

“This one is definitely at the top of the list for me. I’ve never gotten to drive that much in a video. I love feeling a little out of my comfort zone and challenged. That 93 Bronco did not drive easy, but it was fun. It was a blast.”

This song follows close behind the one-year anniversary of the release of her debut album, Stronger Than I am.

“I feel like I’ve grown so much as a songwriter in the last 365 days. We’ve toured probably…we’ve gotta be at like 90 shows in 2022. So I feel like I’ve grown as an entertainer, as a songwriter, and it just makes me really grateful to be with a label that has let me continue to put out music after that. I don’t take that for granted at all,” Rose said, reflecting on how far she’s come in the past year. “I’m excited for the new songs, but I’m so grateful for that first project and it’s been cool to watch the fans learn it over the last 365 days.”

Looking at her current career as a whole, Rose is proud of where she is headed with her music. Although it hasn’t been an easy journey moving to Nashville and joining the large pool of competition, all the hard work is starting to pay off.

“I knew it was gonna be hard, but I didn’t know how hard it was gonna be. I’m so grateful that I got a break because there were plenty of times there were tears of ‘I don’t want to go work this part-time job. I just need a break. I feel like I got something different. I got something special. I got something to say.’ And it’s everything and more. I never imagined in my wildest dreams that it would’ve happened the way that it did. So, yeah, it’s been pretty cool and I’m living in it right now and not taking a single day, a single show for granted.”

With a few new releases already under her belt this year, Rose teased that she has a few more new songs in the works that she’s looking forward to sharing in the near future.

“No project in sight yet, but we’re just gonna release songs, see what happens. I hope that a project can come of it. I hope an album can,” Rose said before adding in that she also hopes to add some collaborations to her resume soon.

“That’s one thing that I haven’t done yet. I haven’t had a feature or collaborated with anyone, so hoping to do that.”

In the meantime, Rose recently wrapped up her time her stint as a special guest on Sam Hunt’s 2022 Tour, and now, she’s on the road with Dylan Scott, serving as direct support for his Amen To That trek.

“It’s just really cool to be on two tours with dudes who put on really good shows but also are just so kind.
It shows in their camps too and their tour families. So we’re lucky to be included in that.”

Lily Rose’s next performance is set for Friday, Oct. 21 in Champaign, Illinois. Click HERE for a full list of upcoming tour dates.
