Lil Yo on Becoming a Healthier Person

He goes by his rap name Lil Yo.  Lil Yo was raised on the Northside of Houston Texas , and he grew up in a dangerous Neighborhood called Lakewood where,m as he sais, so much stuff happened.  His older brother got shot and killed there. In his own words:  “All I could do is take my pain to the blank sheets of paper n started writing music”

Lisa: Hi Lil Yo! What first got you into music? What did you wanted to become when you were a child?

Lil Yo:

What got me into music around the age 19 one day I was messing around with my computer n I stumble upon a program called Audacity I started reading all it could do n I have a friend that produces beats he was like Yo let’s rap on these beats long story short I went to radio shack to buy me a dynamic mic took it back home n feel in love with how everything worked so well from there on it was Music to my ears. What I wanted to become when I was a child well I’ve always worked I earned my first $100 dollar bill when I was 8 n ever since I always wanted to work because I’ve always wanted to buy my own stuff never wanted to ask my parents for anything because I knew we where going threw hard times.

Lisa: How do you describe your music to people?

Lil Yo:

My Music comes from my Soul my heart n everything around me the struggle the structure of building myself into a better person all in one from the city of Houston Texas.

Lisa: What is your creative process like?

Lil Yo:

Im always thinking about Music like my mind is always playing beats people say I’m to quit but in reality it’s because I’m thinking about what I could come up with on a new song or how ama do what if this beat you know if I’m home all day I will browse YouTube for instrumentals all day long tell I find what I like n start to purchase them.

Lisa: I really your debut single “Laidback”. Can you tell me more about it? What is it about, and how did you get inspired to write it?

Lil Yo:

My New Single Laid Back is about a boy growing up in a neighborhood where he had to hustle n work hard to help pay some bills around the house in the streets where he stayed at trying to get his family out of these streets now that he got older n finally out of the neighborhood sometimes he remembers how having family n friends close to him was always one of the best moments he had n he miss when everyone was laid back. The classic single could not been done without a dope artist from San Antonio that goes by the name Madamn Stazi who is featured on the song laid back n sings the chorus.

Lisa: You’ve had a tragedy in your family.  How much of an influence did that had on your music career? And how did you managed to overcome it and channel it to creativity?

Lil Yo:

My oldest brother that thought me the ways of being a good person n I looked at him as like I wanna grow up n be like him I was very inspired by him in many ways it had a huge influence in my Music career I lost him at the age of 21 I was only 16 at the time he was shot n killed in front of me years passed by I was really depressed for a long time n by being depressed I would always stay in my room n write stories things that I would make up in my mind just to read them another day but that help me to write music n story tell them in my songs.

Lisa: What is one message you would give to your fans?

Lil Yo:

Stay humble believe in yourself don’t let others stop you from making your dreams into reality n whatever you do don’t let the money change you! 

Lisa: What would you be doing right now, if it wasn’t for your music career?

Lil Yo:

Doing what I’m best at hustling n staying humble as I’m doing right now 

Lisa: Are you planning to collaborate with any other artist?

Lil Yo:

Yes always Fun to work with different artists most definitely 

Lisa: What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Lil Yo:

Don’t judge every book by its cover

Lil Yo:
