Jay Allen and Kylie Morgan Explain How They Chose To Take Each Other’s Names After Long-Awaited Wedding: ‘Equality Baby!’

Country stars Jay Allen and Kylie Morgan have tied the knot! The couple was originally set to get married in October, but they were forced to delay their ceremony when Hurricane Ian left a devastating effect on the state. 

After finally getting to say “I Do” on Sunday, Nov. 27 at La Casa Toscana in Fort Myers, Florida, the couple revealed to PEOPLE that they took a non-traditional route on several aspects of their special day. This includes Morgan’s suggestion for both her and Allen to change their names. 

“I am honestly really excited to take the name Allen. We’ve been together so long, it feels like we’ve been married for years, but the name change will truly make it real for me,” she explained. “What a lot of people don’t know is I gave Jay one condition if we were going to get married — I said, ‘I take your name if you take mine.’ Equality baby!”

The “Bridesmaids” singer continued, “My middle name is actually Morgan and Jay’s is Allen. So I said, ‘Well, I want to take the name people know you as. How about you change your last name to Allen?’ He said, ‘Well, then I won’t have a middle name.’ I replied with, ‘If you change your name to Jay Morgan Allen, I will change mine and be Kylie Morgan Allen.’ How I knew I was making the right decision? He did it without hesitation. Now we get to start our own legacy together as Jay Morgan Allen & Kylie Morgan Allen.”

In addition to this unique decision, they also created their own triangular symbol that represents both of their hometowns in addition to their Nashville residence. Not only was this symbol placed around their venue, but they also made it a part of their everyday lives in the form of matching tattoos. 

Allen later took to Instagram to show off their new ink with the caption, “One week as a married couple. Still pinching myself that I get to call her my wife…”

Guests also had the chance to join in on the fun and receive small tattoos of their own during the celebration. 

“It was important to us that our wedding felt unique and non-traditional and accurately represented who we are, not only as individuals, but also what we embody as a couple,” Morgan told the outlet. 

The singer/songwriters first met during a writing session years ago and instantly clicked. He then took the next step when he popped the question in 2021 on their sixth anniversary of dating and she happily said yes. The public engagement took place in the midst of their set on the Whiskey Jam stage, a place they had both been to together many times before.

“It was such a full-circle moment,” Morgan previously told PEOPLE. “When I first moved to Nashville at 19 years old, I would be at Whiskey Jam every single Monday because it was just always the place to go and network. It was just really cool to go back to where it all began and really close the deal.”

Now they get to continue sharing their love for each other and enjoying married life as they embark on the first leg of their honeymoon in Belize.

Kylie Morgan recently took to Instagram to share a photo of the newlyweds on the plane as they showed off their wedding rings and “Mr.” and “Mrs.” Passports. Later on, they plan to enjoy another getaway to Bali.
