Quadruple Grammy nominee, Elle King, expresses her fun-loving persona in her latest release, “Try Jesus” and the accompanying music video.
Co-written by King alongside Ashley Gorley, Ben Johnson, Casey Cathleen Smith and Geoffrey Warburton, this track finds the singer questioning her choices in relationships. Feeling unfulfilled, she decides to “Try Jesus” and “see what all the fuss is about.”
“Thinkin’ I should try Jesus / Cause every other man let me down / Got me singin’ “Hey Hallelujah, A-freakin’-men” / Baby, I don’t need me anybody but him,” she sings in the chorus.
“‘Try Jesus’ came at a time I was trying to give my life over to something greater – and you can feel it,” King shared in a recent release.
The music video replicates the same witty demeanor from the moment King steps into the Dollar Mart Plus. In order to bring enough sass and comedy that matches the captivating energy of the song, the singer brought in some backup from a co-star of her favorite series.
“The Righteous Gemstones is one of my favorite shows and I adore and have a hell-a respect for Edi Patterson who plays Judy Gemstone,” King confessed. “She responded quickly to my DM and said she would love to work together. She came up with the concept and believe it or not this is her directorial debut! She’s such a pro and brought this energy, focus and joy to the set and I’m so excited this video is finally out!”
In talking about the creative production, Patterson added, “My goal with the concept for this video and for the execution of it was to have an idea that helped Elle feel totally free to be completely gorgeous and wildly funny. Spoiler alert- she’s really, really good at both.”
Throughout the video, King is confronted head on by her past mistakes including the “one in LA” who she found out was married, and the “one in Miami” who “swore he was different.”
By the end, she leaves the store feeling like she has finally found the happiness she was searching for.
“Try Jesus” is a small taste of what fans can expect from King’s forthcoming album, Come Get Your Wife, which is set to drop on January 27. According to a recent release, this project is “full of dirt roads from her youth spent in rural Ohio (a nod to that on the album’s opening track), pot holes and bumper-to-bumper traffic on the streets in New York and L.A. and some uncharted routes to London and Nashville.”
The ”Ex’s & Oh’s” singer has taken bits and pieces of her upbringing and sounds of her early influences to create an autobiographical set of 12 tracks.
“This whole album is a crazy quilt of all sorts of moments and things that might not seem to go together, but because they’re me, they do,” King explained. “It’s very Southern Ohio, very who we are – and very much a lot of people who are just like me, because I know they’re out there.”
Co-produced with award-winning songwriter Ross Copperman, the album incorporates elements of her rock, soul, (blue)grass and country sounds that has caused fans to fall in love with her craft over the years.
“There’s something about how you put the pieces together,” she shares ahead of it’s release, “This whole album is a crazy quilt of all sorts of moments and things that might not seem to go together, but because they’re me, they do. It’s very Southern Ohio, very who we are – and very much a lot of people who are just like me, because I know they’re out there.”
Elle King is currently at the end of her run on the road for Chris Stapleton’s headlining All American Roadshow tour. Her next performance is schelued for tonight (Oct. 21) in Bossier City, LA before heading to New Orleans, LA on Oct. 22.
