Dalton Dover Opens Up About Major Label Debut, 'Giving Up On That' & Teases New Music

Dalton Dover is living out his dreams one step at a time.

Since breaking into the music scene as a contestant on The Voice, the Georgia native has inked a record deal, made his Grand Ole Opry debut, and toured with several booming country stars.

He recently crossed off another bucket list item when he dropped his major label debut, “Giving Up On That” via UMG Nashville/ Mercury Records. Dover first got the chance to showcase his new song at his Grand Ole Opry debut, which took place in the historic venue in December 2022.

The powerful track has already hit the airwaves and is currently making its way up the country charts. It was the most added song at Country radio with 60 first-week stations, along with fans streaming the song and garnering over 1 million streams in the first two weeks of its release.

Written by Dover with Adam Craig and Josh Pierce, “Giving Up On That” showcases the singer/songwriter’s cutting-edge vocals as he reflects on a past relationship. Throughout the mid-tempo tune, he finds himself taking ownership of his mistakes and making an effort to prove his loyalty and desire to make things work.

“’Cause girl, I’ve given up on / Drinking as much as I used to when I had you / Given up on, just sayin’ I’m gonna change / I’ve given up on passing the blame / Everything made you walk out on what we had / But when it comes to wanting you back / I ain’t ever giving up on that,” he sings in the chorus.

On top of all this hard work, Dover is also a dad to his two kids, Taylor and Alyiah. He not only strives to dream big for himself but also his children so that they can see just how much they can accomplish when they put their minds to something.

Dover is currently on the road as a supporting act on Chase Rice’s Way Down Yonder Tour. He is also slated to open for Luke Combs at his Gillette Stadium tour stop in Boston this July.

Dalton Dover recently caught up with Country Now to discuss his brand-new single and his upcoming shows. Additionally, he reflected on life since The Voice, and gave an inside look into the sentiment behind his next release.

Can you talk about the moment you heard your song “Giving Up On That” on the radio for the first time?

Yes, really cool. I mean, I’ve just been saying it all day, like, this is what we dreamed about, you know, you dream of having a song on Country radio, dream of hearing it for the first time, you dream of your family hearing it on the radio, you know, like, that’s happening now. So I don’t know, I’m just, I’m grateful. It’s really awesome.

Since you had a hand in writing this song, can you talk about what the message means to you?

I wrote that song with Adam Craig and John Pierce and the song’s just basically about, there’s some things that you give up on, there’s some things you don’t give up on, and then sometimes you don’t have a choice but to give up on it. That’s basically the whole concept of the song and I mean, almost anybody can relate to it, and that’s why we love it so much.

Have you been able to showcase it live on stage yet?

I’ve not gotten play it live since it’s been out, but it’s been really fun, it’s been really cool. Before, people were like, “damn, what is that song? I really like that song.” So now that it’s out and it’s at radio and everybody’s listening to it, I can’t wait to see the reaction when we start playing.

Did you expect this song to have as much success as it has so far?

Oh yeah, we knew it was a great song…I guess now you just don’t ever really know, but like we knew. I mean, we knew we had something special with it, you know? And I hope it continues to grow and I hope everybody continues to love it. We got so many great songs I can’t wait to get out.

As a dad of two that is juggling life at home and life on the road, how do your kids react to seeing you up on stage and hearing your music on the radio?

It’s cool man, because before they were just asking like, “why are you playing so many shows? Why are you never home?” And like now they understand. They heard my song for the first time on the radio yesterday and I wasn’t there, but they heard it and they FaceTime’d me and let me watch them listen to it and stuff. And it’s really cool cause it’s very rewarding knowing that they’re proud of me.

This month you’re going to be hitting the road with Chase Rice on his Way Down Yonder Tour. What can fans expect from your set on this run?

We’ve got a very energetic set. We got some new songs on there, I’m doing the Alicia Keys cover that everybody likes to hear and so, you know, I’m really excited. We’re gonna come out, it’s gonna be a different show that we’ve put on before. So I’m really pumped about it.

What goes through your mind when you think about everything you’ve accomplished in your career since competing on The Voice?

Whirlwind, you know, like I said, this is what we dreamed about. This is what we do it for and I’ve dreamed of all this sh*t that’s happening now. So it’s all happening fast, but like every time I kind of look back, I’m like, man, this is what we did it for, you know? That’s what we’re doing. It’s real cool.

Now that there’s a whole new crop of contestants on The Voice, what advice would you give them as they begin their own journeys?

Just be authentic, man. Just be real and be good at what you do and don’t overdo it. Just be good at what you, that’s it. When you’re good at what you do, it’s undeniable.

You’ve already had a great start to your year, so what else do you have in store for 2023?

I’m really just excited to get more music out, I’m excited to see where all this goes. I’m just grateful to be here and, you know, I’m just ready for what’s next. I don’t know what’s gonna happen, but I’m ready for it.

Do you have any new music in the works that you could talk about?

I think we’re gonna be releasing a Mother’s Day song coming up pretty soon. I posted it on Instagram so I’m pretty sure we’re releasing that soon. I’m really excited about that. It’s a song that I wrote with Dan Isbell and Russell Sutton. I went in with the idea of, “I wouldn’t be here if you hadn’t been there,” and it was just an idea I wanted to write about my mom. It’s a really beautiful song and I can’t wait till everybody can hear it.

What was it like getting to share that song with your mom?

Well, she an advocate, not just for me, but for my brother and my sister. So for me to be able to write a song for her, you know, like that just meant the world to me. Even like for her to hear and it meant something to her, so it’s special.
