Beyoncé Adidas Balmain Switch Occurs

Beyoncé and the fashion world have had a strange relationship over her long career, but the stadium-selling performer just had a significant win.

The “Renaissance” star recently teamed up with Balmain to bring her most recent album to life. This comes swiftly after ending her professional relationship with Adidas.

A Sudden Split

Beyoncé and Adidas have mutually decided to part ways, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The alleged drift follows recent reports of Beys Ivy Park clothing line dropping a staggering 50% percent in revenue. The once coveted Ivy Park brought in a total of $93 million in 2021, then saw a decline with a $40 million in 2022 profit. This is particularly surprising since the Wall Street Journal predicted that the ‘Hold Up’ singers line would sell $250 million last year.

Now, finance experts are singing a different tune, “in five of the last six Ivy Park releases, roughly half of the merchandise that was produced went unsold,” the publication reported, throwing in that the clothing line was “losing money for Adidas.”

Beyoncé initially launched Ivy Park in partnership with Topshop in 2016. The 41-year-old subsequently acquired full ownership and partnered with Adidas a couple of years later because Topshop owner Philip Green went under fire for sexual harassment allegations.

The gender-inclusive clothing line focuses on casual athleisure, particularly hoodies, leggings, and jackets. Ivy Park’s most vital moments have come from its celebrity gift boxes. Namely, Mariah Carey, Monique, and Kehlani got significant attention for posting their 2020 Adidas x Ivy Park boxes. However, more than the celebrities’ notoriety was needed to ensure longevity for this line.

“It’s really the essence: to celebrate every woman and the body she’s in while always striving to be better,” Beyoncé told Elle Magazine in 2016. “I called it Ivy Park because a park is our commonality. We can all go there; we’re all welcome. It’s anywhere we create for ourselves. For me, it’s the place that my drive comes from.”

The brand harkens back to a previous fashion venture of Beyoncé’s, House of Dereon. Similarly to Ivy Park, House of Dereon focused on complimenting women and survived primarily off fan support before slowly declining in sales over time.

Ivy Park has seen many iterations, including Ivy Heart, Icy Park, and the Park Trail Collection. Specifically, the latest drop, Park Trail, featured a viral clip of Ice Spice wearing an orange and camouflage set.

News of the apparent dissolving of Ivy Park caused many on social media to heavily critique Bey’s fashion business acumen. Specifically, Twitter users pointed out Ivy Park’s high price point and avant-grade styling juxtaposed against its mostly working-class demographic.

The “Alien Superstar” singer quickly dashed these claims with a brand new collection with Balmain. The announcement came this past Friday (Mar 23) and came along with several high fashion photos. The couture collection is inspired by each track in “Renaissance.” Spanning from “Virgos Groove” to “Plastic Off The Sofa,” this collection truly captures the essence of Bey’s work.

Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing put up a lookbook this Friday showcasing all the unique garments. In addition to the outfits representing the “Renaissance,” vogue also provided two separate outfits, one of which will serve as Vogue’s April 2023 cover.

Renaissance Couture, aptly named after the album, utilizes unconventional and visually shocking pieces to translate sound into the design. From a firework dress made from fuchsia feathers to a wearable ceiling chandelier, this collection is just as memorable as the record it’s derived from.

Planting The Seed

In a press statement, Rousteing clarified he was inspired to create the line after falling in love with Beyoncé’s latest album last summer.

“Day after day, I kept dreaming up and sketching out new concepts inspired by Beyoncé’s “RENAISSANCE,” the album that had been constantly blaring in my home, office, atelier, and vacation rental — and in an endless loop in my head — ever since it dropped in July 2022,” Rousteing said. “There was no plan, project, or expectation. I had absolutely no reason to be dedicating so much of my time to those drawings, outside of the simple, pure pleasure I got from creating something completely new, as I channeled her glorious, joy-filled art into my own.”

While simultaneously developing runway shows for Balmain, Rousteing worked closely with Beyoncé and her personal stylist Marni Senofonte to customize the looks.

“From the beginning, we knew that this collaboration was going to be unlike any of the others that either of us had worked on before… this is a collection that is based completely on our shared passion for melding together music and fashion,” Rousteing remarked. “The lack of budgeting, roll-out, and marketing plans eliminated the typical boundaries and constraints, creating a dream environment that allowed us to simply experiment, dream and push each other to the max. And that’s exactly what we did.”
