Ariana Debose Comments On Viral Performance

A musical medley dedicated to the actresses that attended the 2023 BAFTA Awards has blown up on social media.

Ariana Debose is a Tony-nominated actress famous for her roles in “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical” and “Hamilton.” However, this past week (Feb 19), the 32-year-old made headlines for a musical performance that left everyone scratching their heads.

Many viewers needed clarification on her unique lyrics and pronunciation, in addition to some name-dropping. Highlights from the set include mentions of Viola Davis, Angela Bassett, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Of course, the backlash expanded on social media, and the performance has now become a bit of a meme.

Eventually, It all culminated in Ariana Debose deactivating her Twitter account altogether. Today, Debose finally responded to the critics about her electric rap medley. While having an interview with BBC Radio 2’s The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, Debose defended her artistic decision.

Debose Is Ignoring The Hate

“You know what, you might be one of the few,” she responded after host Zoe Ball said she enjoyed the performance. “I’ll take it because you’re my people.” Ball then chimed in, defending the Oscar-nominated actress.

“It was a woman, singing and dancing, being magnificent, celebrating women onstage. Come on!” Debose co-signed, saying, “That’s what I wanted to do.”

She continued, “Honestly, it’s not like I’m like, ‘Hey, BAFTA, let me in!’ They actually called me, believe it or not.”

“But that was the assignment. Like, ‘Come celebrate women,’ and I was like, ‘Absolutely!’ We did that, and it was fun. Not gonna lie, I had a blast.”

Of course, while there are always detractors, some came to Ariana’s defense. The director of the box office hit “Elvis” came up to Debose personally after the show to compliment her rap. “gay Twitter seemed to like it, so that’s good. I’ll take it.” she commented.

Another supporter is the multitalented Lizzo, who created her own rendition during a recent concert. While Debose is still swearing off Twitter, she did respond to Lizzo via Instagram. “The internet is wild y’all!” She typed under a repost. “Appreciate all the love.”
