What first got you into music?

When I was a kid, around 3-5 we had a piano in the house.
It just seemed normal to me to sit at that piano and play melodies by ear that I had heard from my father’s record collection or on the TV.
My dad played the guitar and played a lot of jazz, Latin, and classic music in the house, and this captivated me from a very young age.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

Stylistically I have expressed myself through many different styles and mediums.
Classically trained, a Jazz Conservatorium student, an R&B singer, an underground house music producer, a Film & TV composer.
The thing that I always connect with is the simplicity of a hook or a rock song.
Stylistically now, I am making music that is in service to the song, but is heavier and less produced than before.
I am shying away from perfection, auto-tune and “on the grid” mechanical sounds, and going towards authentic performance, grunge influences with perhaps an almost r&b soft edge to them.

What is your creative process like?

My head is always full of ideas.
The “creative process” mostly starts when I decide something is good enough to become a song.
I used to want to get to the recording part really quickly, but these days I spend a lot of time just getting the song structure right (guitar/vocal), and then I use my considerable (addiction level) home studio to record the final version, with help from musician friends around the globe.

Can you tell us a bit more about your favorite song and what inspired you to make it?

My “current” favourite song is the one I just released, “Landslide”.
It’s my favourite because in my songwriting career so far I have never had a song so perfectly express what it was I was trying to say.
From the mood of the music and the meaning of the lyrics and melodies, it perfectly expresses the feelings I was having, what I wanted to say.
And making this song truly allowed me to “let go” of those difficult feelings I was having.

Which famous musicians do you admire?

Too many to list!
Really those formative on me in terms of singing/songwriting are, Seal, Sting, Nirvana, Soundgarden.
I got into rock/grunge late, I was a huge fan of Seal in the 90’s/2000’s.

What is the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into?

I can’t say I’ve ever been in “real” trouble.
But my friend and I pushed each other across live tram tracks in Melbourne in shopping trollies early one morning, (trams on-coming) which probably was not a great idea.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

That really living, is focusing on what’s important to you in the moment, with those who are important to you.
Nothing else is actually “living”.

What’s next for you?

I have a 6 track EP that I will be releasing track by track over the next 4-5 months, with Landslide being the first single.
After that I will do a run of physical copies, and start on the next EP, also singles.
I genuinely want to find people who have a yearning for what music used to be..
Something that people listened to intently, immersed in… that wasn’t just “content” or background noise.
I want to build a world online, and find those people for who music is part of the culture, part of the fabric of their lives..
And share my music with them.
I know they’re out there!
